Radical Honesty
Dear Friends,
I was recently asked in an interview how I feel about the upcoming release. I really struggled to answer this question. In hindsight, if I had been completely honest, I would have said that I am scared.
As I have gotten older, I better understand the cost of laying bare the most vulnerable parts of yourself out to the world. It is done in the first place, as a means of healing - and sometimes that process resonates with others and helps their healing process too. Therein lies the magic.
Other times, it is misunderstood or not received well - which is never a great feeling, but also an expected danger when playing this wild west game of releasing music. But other times (which is where fear arises), the work does not get seen and slips away silently, much like a message in a bottle that is floating out in the middle of the ocean waiting to be found.
This is an increasingly common reality for many musicians these days, as our old ways of promoting music are rapidly disappearing in combination with more music that ever being released. Behind the scenes, almost every musician / label owner I know, is filled with similar concerns, despite their level of success or what instagram may have us believe.
But, with the little sparks of naive hope that still remain within my bones, perhaps this album will find a home in your ears (and some others too).
If you are still with me, I will end by saying that today is Bandcamp Friday, which means it is the final chance to pre-order ‘Sings Again’ for the release in just 3 weeks.
Whale Pebble
The final single for ‘Sings Again’ is out now and available at all your usual online listening places.
‘Whale Pebble’ was the first song that begun this new album and started as a practise in learning how to better use sampling. All of the percussion sounds you hear were made with a paintbrush, some copper coins, screws, pebbles and a ceramic whale that sits on my desk (I really love whales, if you hadn’t realised already). It was loads of fun!
